The ease of doing business index is an index created by the World Bank Group. Higher rankings indicate better, usually simpler, regulations for businesses and stronger protections of property rights. Empirical research funded by the World Bank to justify their work show that the effect of improving these regulations on economic growth is strong. "Empirical research is needed to establish the optimal level of business regulation—for example, what the duration of court procedures should be and what the optimal degree of social protection is. Saudi Arabia is ranked as one of the top players in the world in the 26th position in the ease of doing business compiled by the World Bank. The UAE was placed at 23rd and Kuwait at 104th. A leading businessman in Saudi Arabia lists 3 reasons why the doing business in Saudi Arabia is easy. India continues to rank low at the 130th position in terms of ease of doing business, with the country seeing little or no improvement in dealing with construction permits, getting credit and other parameters. In the World Bank's latest 'Doing Business' report, India's place remained unchanged from last year's original ranking of 130 among the 190 economies that were assessed on various parameters. However, last year's ranking was revised to 131 from which the country improved its place by one spot. Ease of doing business is one parameter by which Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants the success of his government to be judged. World Bank's latest ranking of countries is out and it ranks India 130th out of 189 countries. On the face of it, not a very pretty statistic but the good news is that after many years India has finally moved up the ranks by a significant 12 places.
